Nantucket is rich in history and perhaps most notable for its whaling industry. At its peak, there were 88 Nantucket whaling ships sailing around the world. Nantucket Island was considered the Whaling Capital of the World from 1800 to 1840. The crews of these ships could be at sea for many years and would bring back tokens of affection from the various ports they visited.
One "souvenir" which those who sailed the Caribbean favored to bring back to
their loved one was the Sailor's Valentine. Carefully crafted from seashells and
encased in a shadow box, these unique gifts were cherished for their beauty
and
loving messages.
While you probably can't collect enough shells on your Nantucket vacation to
make your own Sailor's Valentine, you can visit Nantucket Sailors' Valentine Kits
and choose from a nice selection of Valentines to put together yourself.
